Ocean Blue

It is said that every project gives rise to another project. In this case, a competition has emerged from a project. More precisely, from a private competition for the development of an apartment building on the island of Ibiza.

I received the call. A familiar voice told me that he wanted to submit a proposal. A 2,700 m2 project, divided into a basement, a first floor, and four standard floors. When I heard the size of the project, my eyes lit up. If there’s one thing that characterizes me, it’s that I like challenges, and if it’s with time, even more so. That’s how the proposal came about in 15 days.

Give apartment buildings a different perspective. What do today’s families look like? How do they change over the years? What kind of users did you have to design the houses for? Families no longer get along the way they did 50 years ago, so homes can no longer function the way they used to.

The family module is completely variable. There are young couples, older couples, with children, without children… One of the clearest considerations that came to mind was that the composition of families living under one roof changes over time, as does the number of inhabitants. So what we were looking for was absolute flexibility of space. Rooms that adapt to respective needs, multifunctional rooms that can be divided up depending on the user.

Starting from a rigid water core (bathrooms and kitchen), one and the same apartment could thus be transformed from three double rooms into a single open space. The key lay in the hidden mobile partitions.

The possibilities within the same space become manifold: visitors arrive, the family expands, a studio is needed. In these cases, we have the possibility of dividing the room. On the other hand, when the children become independent, a party is coming up or simply a large open space is preferred, the partitions are hidden.

A building where not only the interior layout can be varied, but also the façade, the terraces, and the exterior aesthetics, according to the needs of each individual.

Shall we play?
